The company rolled out Google One’s VPN feature back in 2020, but you could only access it if you’re paying for a plan with at least 2TB of storage, which costs at least $10 a month.
…
it’s discontinuing the feature because “people simply weren’t using it.”
Gee, I wonder why… 🙄
TIL Google one had VPN
I’ve got Google One for the storage but there was no way I wanted all my internet activity routed through the Google servers
The only time I used it was when a hotel wifi was blocking access to my VPN but Google’s worked fine
You had your files in Google One storage though.
Yes but I individually choose what goes in there it’s not the fire hose of data that is everything I browse
TIL Google One
Getting a VPN from Google is like asking the police to safeguard your drugs
Someone should tell killedbygoogle.com about this astounding development
Already updated it seems
What the heck was Google One? For a company that sells ads, they sure suck at marketing.
Cloud storage used by Google Mail, Photos and Drive combined.
Yeah they didn’t really need to advertise it specifically. It’s a core part of a lot of their other tools
Edit: the cloud storage didn’t need advertised. I’ve never heard of their vpn before even though sounds like I technically had access to it lol
I wouldn’t trust it anyway.
Can’t imagine trusting a VPN made by Google.
I’ve used it, but only when I’m on some really sketchy unencrypted WiFi network, like in an airport or a hotel.
It doesn’t offer location spoofing like all other VPNs on the market, which I would have more use for.
Well this sucks. I used it when I traveled, public hotspots and such. Worked fine. I never found them intercepting traffic, and I use private DNS. I don’t think they can get into tls connections yet, so as long as your apps are secure, it’s just as reasonable a risk as a public wifi.
Google Fi also includes a VPN, I wonder if that’s going as well?
