Economists in Hawaii warn that residents who survived the wildfire that destroyed much of the Maui community of Lahaina might not be able to afford to live there after it is rebuilt unless officials alter the zoning laws and make other changes.
We all knew this was going to happen. In pre-covid days one of my clients- a well -known community pillar- was trying to lay the ground work for affordable housing projects. Everybody involved wanted a piece of the pie and the baseline for “affordable” was $3K/month. He scrapped the project, but had intended to do it on his own with me as project manager.
