  • That’s sadly not how the world works. The code for the most popular distros is posted and maintained on Github which is owned by Microsoft, a US company. If the state of California sees that Github is hosting illegal content, they will block that site and Microsoft isn’t going to want that site to be blocked in the state that Sillicon Vally is located in. All financial institutions that are located in America are also not going to let themselves be open to any form of lawsuit from the state of California for allowing transactions for “illegal” software and will instead block donations. It sucks but most FOSS projects rely on these shitty companies to run, and these corps would rather sack any project than let the smallest possibility of a lawsuit happen. So basically, the USA sucks and other countries will hopefully stop relying on this shitty country

  • That is literally my point. But i think you’re underestimating how difficult a task like that is not only just to migrate but also to learn new tools, if it were so easy, why haven’t they done it yet? Not to mention the servers and fiscal activity done in the US that will also be targeted and moving to places like the EU where they are already implementing ID verification laws isn’t a good idea. They’d have to move them to other countries that are less likely to do such a thing, but there are no guarantees those countries will stay safe. So do you think the devs would rather do all that or add an age field that is stored locally? If the laws get worse (which they very well might), we should start funding campaigns that try to fight these laws through legal means and through awareness, this is personally what I think is the best idea but I’m open to hearing other methods. Getting mad at this one guy is doing nothing and if anything, will make devs not want to maintain these projects.

  • Look, it sucks that they’re complaying early with no push back ok. Like not even watiing until the law goes into affect at the least. But what else are they supposed to do besides comply, get off Github or lawyer up when the time comes. If you don’t belive they can move off GIthub then we, as a community, should try to support these devs for a legal battle with the state. I don’t care about this guy, I care about long term solutions to protect our privicy. And to answer your question I don’t think many distos are going to switch off Github, that is a laborus task. I just don’t know what other solutions to this problem are besides this

  • Y’all are going after this guy rn but in a few months we should expect more and more distros to do changes like this. So lets think, what is the real issue going on here? The real issue is that these distros are hosted on GitHub, which is a Microsoft company, and they will comply in a heartbeat and take that shit down if the software is against the law. So the two options are to move off Github or wait until it gets taken down, and lawyer up and fight California and Colorado, which if so, we’d better start a fund as a community for some lawyers for these devs.

  • I’ll have to agree with this too, besides Trilogy, Teccota and Bitchn Crystal its the long songss for me:)

Honestly I have a uge soft spot for all of the more “concept” prog stuff in general but I feel like thats a popular opinon. Besides Foxtrot, people always like Selling England by the Pound more for some reason. (Epping Forest and First of Fifth rocks tho)

  • This reminds me of my friend’s dad. He got crippled at a machanic job, so he’s on disability, but he still wants to be useful in his life and use his skills, so he does machanic stuff on the side. Some people might think this is cheating, but he can only reasonably work on cars like 15hrs a week, or it’ll fuck up his back so much he can’t walk for a couple of days.

A messed-up situation that some people get into is that some of these programs have a cut-off if you make too much money, but if you actually make that much money in income, you’ll have less than you would if you were slightly under that amount, because you have to pay for what those benefits would have given you otherwise.

It basically makes people stuck near the poverty line because these programs don’t really give that much assistance. In my state if you’re a family of three, the most you can earn is $915 a month in household income and the average payment is $221. This isn’t counting the other benefits you’d get booted off of if you reached different income brackets.

I’m looking at this living wage site right now https://livingwage.mit.edu/states/39 and from this page you can see that 2 working adults can’t both work your average Food Preparation & Serving Related, Building & Grounds Cleaning & Maintenance or Personal Care & Service job and be above to cover your average annual expenses if you have a single kid. So it’s really not worth it to get off these benefits unless you find a significantly better job than what’s available. Most of the other employment opportunities need some sort of education or experience as well.

Please correct me if I’m off base on any of this

  • Loving and saving this whole thread, I’ll add in

Ones & Zeros, Vol. 1 - 3rdegree, not SUPER unique, but it’s instrumental and commitment to they’re concept album’s theme of uploading your consciousness into the internet gives it a ton of charm!

Larks’ Tongues In Aspic - King Crimson , very surprised I haven’t seen this one in the thread, a classic weird ass prog album by the Kings of Prog themselves (IMO of course). They got a guy to do a bunch of random sounds for the album and he left to become a monk days before they started the album tour lol.

  • It’s really as simple as asking your GM if your character would know this. “Hey GM, would my character know if the troll is weak to fire?” and you’ll either get “No, your character is unfamiliar with this region and it creatures” or “Yes, your friend in the town guard recited his tale of falling such a beast at your last posting”. A lot of people enjoy this game to role-play, and using knowledge your character wouldn’t have can take the fun out of it.
