  • Do you (or your friends) have an old device?

    – All you need is for FB is an internet connection. A friend of mine got an old Huawei from a thrift store and a TextNow SIM card for $5 from Target; BestBuy, WalMart and convenience stores sell them as well along with 7-day trial SIM cards.

You must use VPN. Proton’s free version should be fine. If you don’t have VPN, Proton is currently offering a 50% off on VPN until December 7 – I think it’s for 2 years for $59.76 (No, I don’t work for Proton but I paid almost $72 for a subscription five days ago. Mullvad is also highly recommended, it’s about 5€ a month and no long term commitments (I also use Mullvad and like it a lot).

    – I provided her with a face (free) from thispersondoesnotexist.com There are other websites, so pick one that you like.

After you have VPN on and a phone number (textnow, burner, hushed, textfree - pick one), then download FB and create a new account.

Use your DuckDuckGo email address! FB will hoard whatever it can from that device, as long as you don’t do anything else (especially banking) but FB you should be fine.

    – If you want to create an identity, there are plenty of websites. The two below are behind Cloudflare so you’ll probably need to CAPTCHA to get through (they may be the same company):

    https://www.fakenamegenerator.com/ https://fauxid.com/

No CAPTCHA needed to get in: https://generate-random.org/persons

    1. Get your email address and a phone number ready.
    2. Install VPN – for an old iOS you might need to have iOS 16 running (as per Mullvad and Proton); you need iOS 15 for FB
    3. Dowload FB
    4. Check out posts by @Charger8232@lemmy.ml especially if you’re interested in privacy and security.

The steps above are what my friend did for her FB marketplace account, then she switched to an old iPhone.
    Good luck!

  • Many skin care products have fragrance to mask the aroma of the finished product (and the skin).

Unless the products are made with essential oils, they [skin care products] have “masking fragrance” in the ingredients list on Unscented Products. These essential oils serve a dual purpose by enhancing a product’s skin care benefits and providing aroma.

Crafters and hobbyists will tell you that their finished candle, soap, lip balm, lotion, etc. smells unpleasant or off until fragrance and/or essential oil is added.

@DagwoodIll@piefed.social is spot on, witch hazel can be used as an after shave. Don’t worry about the aroma, it dissipates rather quickly.

  • Several of my friends and family are active supporters of Philabundance and the Food Bank of South Jersey.

When I was younger, my parents would take me with them to a soup kitchen especially around Thanksgiving. My mom and grandmom are great cooks so they were in the kitchen helping, my dad and I are the clean-up crew and grandpa walked around like he owned the place, lol. This went on for years until my grandparents started having trouble walking.

Last week, our elders called in a family meeting. We are making Halloween care packages for some people we know that are in need, filled with non-perishable goods (mac & cheese, soup, tuna, tapioca, crackers, beans, spam, corned beef, etc.).

The kids’ trick-or-treat bags are the full-size Halloween themed grocery bags filled with pudding, mac & cheese cups, ramen cups, soup cups, chicken (flat pack not can), PB & Cheese crackers and some candy, too.

We usually do this after Halloween (for Thanksgiving and Christmas) and the Goddess of the Canned (me) would help collect and deliver.

Anyway, thank you for creating this post, OP. It will help highlight and spread the word fact about food insecurity. There are a lot of people out there thinking about whether to buy their medicine or buy food.

So, if anyone wants to help, there are plenty of places in your area. Monetary donations are also welcome.

  • Hypothetically, yes but there are injuries and other factors involved. Also, who does the car belongs to?

If someone drives into you and totals their car and hurts you while you are on work business, they only worry about paying for your costs.

In many states, if you (car 1) are hit from behind, it is their (car 2) fault. Fault needs to be determined to establish who is legally responsible for the financial burden for property damage, injuries, etc. **

The car is a tax writeoff to them.

The insurance companies will determine if a vehicle is totaled; if the total repair cost is more than the vehicle’s Actual Cash Value then the vehicle is a total loss.

If someone drives into you and totals your car and hurts you while you are on work business, they need to now worry about paying for you and your car.

Again, any collision where injuries are involved is always complicated. Fault needs to be determined in order to establish legal responsibility. ***

**There are 16 states in the US with No-Fault Insurance Laws. Drivers in these states are required to have Personal Injury Protection (PIP) on their car insurance policy which helps pay for medical costs after a vehicle accident regardless of who caused it.

***Workers’ Compensation is a type of insurance that provides salary replacement and medical benefits to employees become ill or injured because of their job. This is not my area of expertise.

I didn’t realize until now, I’m so sorry for the lengthy response.

  • Liability and insurance.

It’s easier for a company to rent a car because the contract states who is responsible for what in the unfortunate event of an accident.

Sure, you can get reimbursed for the mileage, gas, tolls and probably time but not for wear and tear when you’re using your own vehicle. If there’s an accident, who’s insurance is responsible? That becomes very complicated. I know that sounds absolutely horrible…

Over the years, mainly due to litigation, many companies have made it a company policy to not use personal vehicles for company functions.

EDIT: Forgot to add that some companies (including the one I work for) prefer automatic just in case someone else needs to drive that vehicle if the main driver is incapacitated; most people today drive automatic instead of manual transmission.

  • Oo, Kabayan. Nice to meet you, too.

My aunt wanted me to tell you that if you and your sister ended up liking the ornamental variety, you should consider the dwarf kind especially if you’re looking for a bountiful harvest. The ornamental peppers are more for decorative purposes, will not get bigger and likely not as spicy.

Her peppers died when she went away one weekend and the temperature dropped to 32°F/0°C (all her plants were still outside) and never recovered. The directions on caring for your peppers (or any plant) are more of a guide until your plant is stable, after that it’s up to you to troubleshoot and fortunately you don’t need to.

Is Pinakurat the seafood dish with gata and veggies? Yum, but not as spicy for me, lol. My family is split between spicy and don’t do it.

I’m not a good farmer or gardener but successfully grew okra, spinach, beets, beans and even corn (albeit very small) in the past. Flowers seem to grow well in my crappy dirt. Haven’t done anything in three years because life happens! I really think it’s the stinky rice water that helps them grow – at least that’s what the elders in my family keep saying. It’s fine when your plants are outside but inside the house ?! That’s on you, lol. They do linger…

Keep us posted on your progress. Congrats on your Thai peppers! Best of luck to you as well.

  • Oh my goodness! Those are perfect! You must have a green thumb!

My grandparents call them “sili” and would occasionally place them in a bottle of coconut vinegar. They look exactly like the ones I purchased from Longwood Gardens, PA years ago (sold as Thai Dragon Pepper). These plants (dwarf) only grow about 2 feet (60 cm?) and the ornamental kind will stay small BUT do not underestimate their spicy power! I ended up having to go to my PCP’s (GP) office to get my eyes flushed. My fingers were stingy for almost a day – worse than jalapeños.

Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it! I ended up giving mine away to my aunt and they did thrive by her kitchen window for a couple of years (morning sun). They may get slightly bigger but don’t expect much. Maybe they will grow differently with compost?

My grandmother used to water her plants with rice water, lol. She calls it “hugas bigas”, which is the water used to wash rice but instead of throwing it out, she saves it in a huge bucket and uses it to water her plants. They stink – consider yourself warned.

IMO, it doesn’t look like you need help; I think you should start giving us lessons. Good luck and enjoy! They are beautiful!

EDIT: We are talking about the same thing; my aunt said it’s “siling labuyo”. I didn’t know what “labuyo” was so I had to ask.
