If you were wondering what 1999 felt like WRT to the internet, well, here we are. The Matrix was still fresh in everyone’s mind and a lot of online tech innovation kinda plateaued, followed by some “market adjustments.”
I was gonna say. It’s this exactly. Plus a nice feature of Fediverse stuff is that it can scale down to hobby levels if needed. Venture funded commercial services abhor this and will compromise all kinds of things (e.g. morals, ethics) to keep going at whatever scale they’re at.
This gives me hope. It’s like we’re all finally learning how to moderate forums in this ridiculous climate.
I have been sexually harassed as a man in public transportation too and while i recognize it’s not as bad for me as it is for women, because it only happened a few times, it always happened by forcing me to be smushed against a ton of people.
Let me just say: I am sorry you went through that. This is awful and indeed unacceptable. Thank you for pointing out that assault is not an entirely gendered issue, and that segregation sends everyone down a slippery slope where we fail to stop it in the first place.
I’ve been trying to wrap my head around this too. Just yesterday, I was thinking “what would Mr. Rogers say/think at a time like this?”
Then it dawned on me that maybe the worst parts of society had a radically different upbringing and media exposure than myself. 1 The so-called “violent” cartoons (many of which were just toy commercials) I get and recall people keeping that stuff from their kids. But to think of banning something like (1980’s) PBS in your home, of all things. Now I understand why that messaging existed in the first place - we might be worse off right now without it.

For me, the cherry on top is how the “InfoWars” name is still completely apt, for completely different reasons.
I think there’s always going to be that group of people. Another example: folks that didn’t notice that The Colbert Report was satire.
That also sounds like the kind of prank that Cards Against Humanity would pull if they had access to as much cash. I love this so much.
In my experience, this kind of sentiment is what marks someone as a seasoned professional. When you finally see that all tools are flawed and deserving of some negative remark for a bone-headed misfeature or three, you’ve arrived. Carry on.
I mean, if that ultimately gets me a girlfriend, I’ll give it a shot. Seems like a lot of extra steps though.

Apparently, caffeine in soft drinks is synthetic. I thought they just used caffeine that is extracted from decaffeinating coffee beans - not so. Also it’s barely produced in the US (anymore), and we mostly import it from China.
Neat part is: it doesn’t look all that complicated to synthesize and requires some common-ish organic compounds and solvents to make. As a bonus, the “the raw synthetic caffeine often glows - a bluish phosphorence”. If anyone is on his Patreon, please give NileRed a nudge to give this a shot; I think it would be right up his alley.
So we can get by without coffee, but short of running your own chemistry lab, it’s going to be a bit before industry can ramp up production of the synthetic stuff. Meanwhile, caffeinated beverages across the board would be more expensive were synthetic caffeine a part of any tariff scheme.

That’s incredible. I happen to use a Logitech thumb-ball mouse, so I’m quite familiar with the concept. Never thought to use a conventional mouse upside down though; that’s incredibly resourceful.
I don’t know if you or anyone else here needs to see this, but this reminds me of Ben Heckendorn who makes custom accessibility controlers. He’s also known for a bunch of stuff, including Bill Paxton Pinball, the Hand-held 2600, podcasts, YT videos, and more junk on his site.
Why not both? It’s easier to force your way under and into that tent/coalition with an organized front to do the talking. A political party that has well defined goals and objectives, while speaking for a big group, is bound to be better at working within a broader coalition than what we have now.
