Yes aleph posted links to survey data below that shows most Hareidi Jews do not consider themselves “somewhat” or “very” Zionist. Hence that statement. I was basing my statement on government participation. Hareidi Jews vote at or above national voting rates, and their parties (Shas and UTJ) are members of the governing coalition. Anti-Zionist parties (such as Ra’am) would never be willing to join a ruling coalition.

Your definition of Zionism is almost certainly not what the word means in Israel

They are a minority in Israel, but powerful because they all vote as a block, so their votes are almost guaranteed.

They believe that their prayer and study provides divine protection to Jews in the land of Israel, so is better than military service. Most Israelis consider that bs and say that they are living for free off of the state.

Hopefully they leave the government in protest and trigger an early election. They are the only parties left keeping Netanyahu in power. (IE if any one of them left, he would lose the majority)

The vast majority of Hareidi Jews are Zionist. There are small groups totalling a few thousand who are Anti Zionist but live in Israel.

The Ultra Orthodox majority not only supports the state, but are represented by religious parties in the current government under Netanyahu.

Edit: Survey data shown below shows that although Hareidi Jews in Israel participate in the government, are represented by designated parties, and those parties are members of the current government under Netanyahu, the majority of those same people consider themselves either “not too” Zionist or “not at all” Zionist.

Its not true however. This is Neturei Karta, a small group of a few hundred members that has been denounced by even other Ultra Orthodox groups such as Satmar. Most ultra Orthodox Jews are Zionist [edit: based their participation in the state], although there is a minority who believe that the State of Israel is illegitimate because only God can create a Jewish State in the Land of Israel.

Why don’t communities on Lemmy require “karma” minimums? Because admins remove bots and trolls. If reddit were not a completely toxic site, they could have done so as well.

Reddit uses karma as an underlying status symbol and reinforces it because it is driven by profit and “engagement.” It’s the same with likes on Meta platforms, subscribers/followers on other platforms… the gamification of social interaction. It’s one part of social media that causes the kinds of harms we’ve been talking about here.

The first thing you learn when you start using Reddit is that karma matters. Lots of communities have a minimum. There are communities dedicated to building karma. There are secret clubs for high karma earners.

It is the great unspoken secret that everyone knows.

Lukewarm, chilly…

Lemmy has actually made me more thoughtful about this. Like a lot of people here, I was previously on reddit, where most interactions were pretty toxic. Now I do try to think about how my contributions make the platform better or more useful for others.

I was a “top 1% poster” on reddit (according to them), but it was mostly garbage and reposts and “zingers” so even though it got a lot of updoots, it was not really helpful to people. There were some communities that were exceptions, where I put a lot of effort, research, etc., but they were more niche.

But if you don’t thoughtfully respond to every strawman, then the internet WINS!

We don’t think about it a lot, but part of the cost of buying groceries is also the cost of garbage service. Everybody has to pay for the disposal of their own waste. For most households, it is a minimal cost, and it may even be so minimal that it’s rolled into another expense that you don’t even see (included with rent, municipal taxes, etc.).

For manufacturing, however, it’s a totally different story. Industry produces huge amounts of waste, and often they don’t pay to dispose of it properly. The word “giveaway” is exactly right. We are, paying for their cleanup expenses.

Of course they were, in retrospect. But at the time, they were considered flukes.

It’s true, and probably some of the moralizing that justifies the current situation in the eyes of the right wing. They see it as “taking back” the court and doing the same thing that “left” was already doing.

The American far right has always had an outsized voice among conservatives, going all the way back to Father Coughlin, who was sympathetic to Hitler and Mussolini. Even mainstream conservatives tended to consider the supreme court more or less immune to political manipulation, with decisions like Roe v Wade to be the exception.

A bad decision like Bush v Gore or Citizens United was seen as an anomoly. While there were people who saw these as the political flexing they were, the general sentiment of the public was, “well, it must have been a difficult and complex decision. I’m sure they understand the legal impact and made the best decision that they could for the future of the country.”
