Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is self-hosting becoming too gatekept by power users?English
61·1 day agoSelf hosting is a great opportunity to learn about some popular technologies and even acquire a few sysadmin skills. Required knowledge of a self-hosted solutions tech stack is not gatekeeping any more than required knowledge of tools and building materials is gatekeeping when it comes to renovating your bathroom. In either scenario, if you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s going to be a much more difficult job.

That said, you should not be exposing any of your services to the public if you don’t know what you’re doing. That’s a quick way to a bad time.

Instead It's

Third time in the last 4 months.

Programming@programming.dev•What do you think the future of Windows is?
4·4 days agoThe PC OS market is saturated and has been for years with Microsoft dominating the market since mid 1990’s.
They were smart enough to realize the market was tapped out a long time ago and have worked aggressively to transform the entire organization from an OS provider into a SaaS provider that also happens make the dominant PC OS. Windows is slowly becoming just a funnel to chain you to the Microsoft “ecosystem” and make it easier to sell you more of their services. Good business decision but shitty deal for the customer.
That said, one of the major selling points for Windows has always been backward compatibility. Enterprise customers like to keep running their ancient software and some of them will pay exorbitant licensing fees to keep doing that.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Ideas for computer challenges for a 7yo
18·5 days agoYou could do what my dad did and accidently delete some of the system files, leaving it for your kid to fix.
The reason I want my children to have access to a computer specifically, is that while TVs and phones are used to consume, computers are used to create.
Joking aside, that’s an interesting perspective. I hadnt really thought of it that way before, despite using a computer to create things almost every day.
It really used to piss me off when the older techs would make me crawl around in nasty crawlspaces while they stood around and smoked cigarettes.
I get not wanting to be there but I’m not not about to leave some poor kid who doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing fumbling around in the dark by himself for half the day.
Sometimes I think I should have stayed in the trades. Then I remember having to tear hundreds of HVAC smoke dampers out of a new building and replace them with fire and smoke dampers because the boss decided he was just going to whatever instead of what the blueprints called for.
Then I’m good for a while.
I’ve seen plenty of back ends that needed to be destroyed.

191·7 days agoOne time I got written up for stating that “failing to take cyber security seriously creates a massive potential liability” for the company. Apparently that was “out of line.”
Well you know what else is out of line? Critical infrastructure organizations (i.e. utilities) that don’t take security seriously.
I do not miss that dumpster fire.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Bad people and bullies usually have justified reasons for why they are doing bad things, so instead of blaming them, maybe sympathize with them.
11·8 days agoI grew up in a family with a cycle of abuse.
I now understand why my dad was as angry and violent as he was. It honestly made me feel sorry for him and made it easier to forgive him. But in no way did it excuse or justify his actions. What he did was still wrong.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Protip: Don't lose count
147·7 days agoPro Tip:
If you ever find yourself in the position of having a pistol shoved in your face and you cannot safely escape, it is possible to disarm your assailant.
Quickly grab the wrist or forearm of the hand holding the weapon with one hand and grab the weapon’s muzzle with your other hand. While directing the weapon away from your body, push down on the muzzle like a lever. Your assailant will not be able to maintain their grip on the weapon. Be prepared for it to discharge because it probably will. If you decide to attempt this maneuver, DO NOT hesitate or you will probably get shot.
