I’ve come across many troubling subreddits over time, but PoliticalCompassMemes was the first one that made me feel like I was witnessing the beginning of a dangerous online pipeline. At first, it seemed like a “funny, all-inclusive political humor sub,” but the more I looked, the more unsettling it became. Unfortunately, things have only gotten worse since then.

I’ve seen a lot of awful subreddits over time but PoliticalCompassMemes was the first subreddit I ran into that made me feel like I was actually staring into the start of the pipeline. The way it was masquerading as a “funny all inclusive political humour sub” at the time was nauseating and it’s only gotten worse since.
To be fair, there’s about a fifty-fifty chance that a subreddit, or lemmy community for that matter, called “supressed news” is going to be filled loonies, and those guys could spend all day masturbating to the though of violently dismantling the power of the World Economic Forum.

It’s just like email. It mostly doesnt matter what instance you choose as you can talk with almost any other instance. There are a couple instances that have been defederated from most other instances, but they are few and far between. Anyway, it’s exactly like email.
Think of an “instance” as a server (or servers) where Lemmy is being hosted. So, lemmy.world is hosted by one entity while lemm.ee is being hosted by another. They just have different servers, but they can interact with each other.
