    Cohen wasn’t the consigliere. The consigliere stands outside the hierarchy, and so can argue with the boss or otherwise violate the strict mafia code of authoritarianism without it being a problem. It’s actually a really good system; it lets you maintain very strict authority in your mafia system, while solving that problem that people like Putin or Trump have where if you get rid of everyone who disagrees with you, you’re eventually surrounded by fools and liars and no one else.

    From what I heard of the tapes of Cohen talking with Trump privately, I’d be surprised if he argued with Trump much if at all, and it doesn’t sound like Trump respected his input. I would call Cohen a hatchet-man. I don’t think Trump has enough awareness to want someone around who’s going to be straight with him at any time, let alone all the time as their official role.
