Spam filtering is largely based on user reports. If their emails are getting marked by users at a higher rate than the other side of the aisle, that’s because people are thinking the emails are spam, and thus should be filtered as such.
I donated once to Obama, and once in Wisconsin to watch the cast of The Princess Bride do a table read of the movie. I get a lot of emails ever since soliciting more donations. Honestly they are basically spam, but I never report them as such. I could probably opt out, but I just ignore them and gain even more “unread points” in my mailbox game.
The polite thing is unsubscribe. And when the service doesn’t follow through, smash that report button.
I’m wondering if GOP emails with their constant scare tactic really bothered people, hence more likely to hit report.
The other assumption is that its also based on open rates & sends, which Google has. I’m going to assume (sample size of one, me) that most people don’t actively sign up to get political emails and get their updates elsewhere. While GOP folks follow everything to show support. Which also means low open rates, or inflated fake emails. All of that can signal to Google the newsletter is worthless, or spam.
Similar situation, occasional Dem donor getting donation requests from every Democrat running in every state. It’s annoying and I tend to unsubscribe but have occasionally reported as spam. I prefer to donate to more high stakes races.
It’s funny that you say that, I was getting consistent emails from Biden but never unsubscribed. The subject lines are kind of like headlines. “Biden campaign emails [presumptive] supporters [clever]/[desperate]/[humorous) email”. Some email marketing insights direct from a source.

Let’s all sign-up to get the emails so we can report them as spam.
