Does this amplify the things spoken to you or just audio you are listening to? I have a broader sensory processing disorder, and I’ve really become picky about the types of situations I’ll go into because it takes such a huge toll. I think it would probably be easier to live with if I didn’t have to concentrate so hard on separating conversations from ambient noise

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why does everyone put celery in soup stock?
2·6 天前I hate celery but love cilantro.
Weirdly, after I had covid cilantro tasted like perfume and I couldn’t stand it. I was very worried that it would forever be a ruined flavor, because it does definitely overpower food. Thankfully it’s gone back to normal lol

politics @lemmy.world•"Stand your ground" means you can use lethal force if masked, unidentified men don't leave your house or threaten you in your car. Wondering when we'll have the first case already...
11·9 天前Guns are expensive, bullets are expensive, training with bullets enough to know you won’t miss a moving ice bucket is expensive.
Dealing with the subsequent court case, even if the shooter was legally in the right, would also be expensive. That’s if they survive shooting at “law enforcement”, of course
Small lemon varieties exist! You don’t have to paint over them, you can drop facts on anyone who asks about it lol

News@lemmy.world•Man Charged for Wiping Phone Before CBP Could Search It
8·12 天前This town is 40mi south of the Canadian border, and you will hear people speaking other languages in public as long as you aren’t in one of the racist bars. Unfortunately, I lived there for a while, and the CBP are constantly waddling into gas stations and shops hoping to relive the glory of making international headlines. (they just arrested someone from the UK, so that strategy must be working)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What can we do about the increasing problem of these self-deleting bot accounts?
11·12 天前Wait, do they keep reusing the same username? Because I feel like I’ve been playing wack-a-mole blocking a certain user, and it makes a lot of sense that they’d just be creating new accounts constantly

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Ok, honestly, is cast-iron really any better than a non-stick, stainless, copper (anything else?) pan?
13·15 天前Teflon and certain ceramic non-stick pans can’t handle the heat needed to sear a steak. You can look up the heat range of your pans, but generally if it isn’t cast iron or steel, it’s going to warp or degrade the coating. That means they won’t last as long.
On the other hand I’ve never had to toss a cast iron pan. Sometimes I’ve needed to scrape off seasoning and redo it, and it’s rare to ruin a cast iron pan to the point it can’t be redeemed. But I’ve just bought my first carbon steel wok because it’s much lighter than cast iron

8·17 天前Assuming Lemmy is still around by then, the front page will have a cat on it.

News@lemmy.world•Influential study on glyphosate safety retracted 25 years after publication
22·18 天前All but one of the authors of this paper are dead. I agree with you though, and I would hope a retraction of a paper as serious as this would trigger a review of all the papers connected to the authors.

World News@lemmy.world•Vatican commission votes against allowing women as Catholic deaconsEnglish
5·18 天前I was raised Catholic, and I asked my mother once why we never saw women as deacons or priests. I was told that women should not be permitted to teach (scripture). There’s a few verses about that in the new testament, in Timothy specifically if I recall correctly.
Imagine how confusing that was for me considering most of the faculty at the Catholic school were nuns! Or that my mother herself was Catechism teacher for Confirmation.

They also have a very strict vegetarian diet, they won’t even eat root vegetables so burrowing insects aren’t disturbed

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the highest level of mathematics that should be expected to graduate high school?
2·1 个月前I think he doesn’t need math tutoring. He needs someone to sit with him while he does his homework, and he needs encouragement. Our education system just marches people through to graduation without giving them the chance to breathe.
But, I agree, our teachers have been struggling for decades.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the highest level of mathematics that should be expected to graduate high school?
2·1 个月前I tutor high school students in math and science. They’ve all taken a budgeting class. One of my students is taking calculus and I genuinely feel he has a better understanding of it than I do!
I am glad he has the option to take calculus, he’s one that gets bored at the place other students need. But I really don’t think many students need it or can fit it in their graduation tracks.
We also need to consider how difficult algebra was for some, to the point that a lot of adults think they hate math. I like the comment in the op that Applied Calculus skills (real-world story problems) are useful, and I think that would have more impact than two-three semesters of calculus.
