For a while I was living in a student dorm in a student area. I was taking a walk when I saw one of those:

A piece of white A4 paper glued to a road sign. The piece of paper says "Islam was right about women" in big black text

Not that particular piece of paper but one with the same text. Took me 2 minutes of googling to trace it back to /pol/.

I’m an atheist and ex Muslim, Islam ruined a large portion of my life… but I took that paper down anyway. Random person had the right to hang it on the street and I had the right to crumble and recycle it.

The statement itself wasn’t the triggering part… The triggering part was 4chaners think they are smart or making some kind of “point” with a quipy and short sentence… hanging out behind a screen trying to affect the real world outside even though they often claim not to be social or get any sun at all. At least that sad 4channer got to take a walk to hang this up. It was confusing more than offensive, had to read it a few times to even get it lololol

4chan, like much of The Internet, is proof that what is lacking in society now is the ability for anyone to have the shit beaten out of them for saying absolute stupid, mean or destructive things.

People are being assholes online because in the real world they are sorely needing to have their ass handed to them for the stupid shit they say.

This is how the world worked for hundreds of years.

No you’re forgetting Hanlons razor and the fact people misinterpret on the net.

This whole attitude of taking words on a screen ‘super serious’ seems like a Zoomer “cyber-bullying” growth hiccup. It’s bollocks. Grow up, stop sanitising your words and say shit you’d say in person. Even if it gets misinterpreted. Who cares?

Cos in person you’d know immediately that I’m taking the piss cos of the giant fucking grin on my face. Everythign I say online I’d be willing to say in person. You wouldn’t twat me one cos it’d be fucking obvious I’m joking.

E.g. I got in a long comment chain with a Java dev after I said “Java is cancer”. I expected them to realise I was joking cos my arguments were brain dead. They took it 100% seriously and called into question my abilities. I upped the ante and said Java devs are “mongols that should be shot and dumped in the sea”.

They STILL thought I was being serious!

Eventually I just carried on full steam and insulted everything about Java and their mental capacity.

I’ve not received a reply yet* but I assume they either realised it was a joke or they’ve gone off quietly steaming that some random on the net hates Java when in reality - they take life way too seriously and I was laughing the entire time.

I guess that makes me a troll? But I don’t care because it’s hilarious and people need to chill the fuck out and not take words on a screen so seriously.

I was forged in the fires of the internet circa 1990s where “trolling” didn’t have a name. It was just piss taking. I’d spend hours annoying random Yanks about Vietnam. You quickly learnt not to take things seriously when everyone was ripping into each other.

The problem with calling me a troll and telling me to be “nicer” on the web results in ultra-sanitised spaces where you can’t say certain words and you end up with idiots saying “latino” is transphobic or Spanish “negro” is racist or “unalive” to avoid triggers.

Stop being a victim. Toughen up. For your benefit and everyone elses. It would result in a more interesting WWW.

4chan is like oldschool internet where anything goes.

Reddit is child-proofed internet where you can’t use profanity or words like “suicide” without triggering someone.

*I’ve recieved a reply - they think I’m serious AND that I’m wound up. I’m pissing myself laughing!!! 🤣

Honestly, so long as folks are cool, I don’t care how smart or dumb they are. (In the chill sense, not the skateboarding dog with sunglasses sense, but that’s fine, too.)

I’m at a point where I’m exhausted by online toxicity and gamesmanship. It doesn’t have to be about quippy tropes, toxic in-jokes, or proving you’re smarter (or dumber) than the next guy for internet points. I just want to have normal interactions with folks.

In that regard, my experience with Lemmy isn’t bad. However, a huge factor in interactions in here (and reddit…) will always be randomness, I think.

We stumble upon a topic or are “guided” through an algorithm. The unpredictability is part of the fun/addiction. So the people commenting and their views on the matter are random, too (at least until the number of users is so high, that you can statically predict what the top comment will say). In addition, our moods vary constantly. Now I’m chatty, another time I feel funny or sad. Just imagine your funny self talking to your sad self about a given topic and already you get a lot of potential conflict. :)

Where am I going with this? I don’t really know, but ya, being chill is probably always a good idea and I wanted to match your Fonzie vibes. :)

Early reddit and the Internet as a whole a little bit before that seemed to have a much better culture. The internet itself was more exclusive and removed. It was rough as arseholes but it was like your old dark smoke filled local. The sad thing is that most who do make such travel to the first world wont be able to find a better life here at all.

Its a misperception created by the economic propaganda politicians use to make themselves look good, sure in theory there is more wealth around but ask the many starving homeless how much of that end up benefitting them.

Not far from my job is an official place where people can request asylum. Over 50% who have the legal right are refused. The paperwork is so idiotic that the state is spending extra money so they can fine themselves but also refusing to pay those fines. In the mean time people dying in the park across the street is a regular occurrence.

The first world is mentally ill. Its a soulless controlled system designed to minimize time spend with people you trust and care about, maximize time spend creating value for the gdp counter. Trying to help people in public can end up in them acting hostile to you.

We mix up happiness with paying for stuff we don’t need, mix up sustainable healthy lives with having enough money saved to hypothetically pay a emergency hospital bill.

Half my friends have seen the inside of a psych ward, a third has made plans to leave to start a new hermit live off the grid. Some have successfully decided to cut their lives short in order to escape.

I assume all first world countries will be a little different, but in most your chances will depend on your socio economic circles like how rich your parents are, wether your grandparents still own a home to pass down to you. But if you come here with nothing but a bag on your back… often criminals will recruite/exploit and reduce them to a slave, alternatively they starvd/ freeze dead in winter or murder/rape each other out of desperation

Tldr: grass looks greener on the other side, its not, It just has different weeds.

The overall point aside, people don’t take Adderall because they want a kick, they take it because they need it to be functional. I’d say that you have to be either ignorant or an asshole to call someone a druggie for regularly taking Adderall, but you know, 4chan, ignorant, asshole, redundancy, yadda yadda.

Edit: Jumping to the conclusion that people take Adderall because they want to get high feeds the stigma that people with ADHD are just drug abusers, which is a core reason why people with ADHD have so much trouble accessing their medication. If someone wants to get high, there’s little reason to go for Adderall rather than drugs actually designed to get you high.

They do, but the point is that you shouldn’t assume that’s the case simply because someone takes adderal. The vast majority of the time, they take it as directed to treat their ADHD.

People abuse literally any psychoactive substance to get high, the point is a majority of people who take Adderall or any other common ADHD medication aren’t.

The people who go around acting like those who treat their disorder are druggies, and derived from that is the myth that ADHD is overdiagnosed rather than severely underdiagnosed (especially in adults, women, and minorities), are why it’s so inaccessible to a lot of people who it can help immensely. It’s been a massive problem for a while now, even media like South Park have been taking that kind of angle attacking ADHD diagnoses/meds for the past few decades.

Actually expanding on this, a large portion of people who illegally use such medications, e.g. for doing schoolwork or studying in university, have undiagnosed ADD and are unknowingly self-medicating. Something like Adderall doesn’t really have affects very different from a bunch of caffeine on non-ADHD minds, it mostly just makes you more alert and less sleepy (on the contrary, a lot of people with ADHD can feel fatigued/sleepy when taking stimulants because now their mind doesn’t have 50 thoughts at once going off at lightning speed 24/7). Who would have guessed ADHD medication helps people with ADHD?

I mean it’s stupid that (in the US at least) we have a society that thinks “some people abuse this drug therefore we should make it extremely hard to get or make it illegal (as long as it’s not alcohol or nicotine) and we should act like most people who use it are abusers and addicts” but it is what it is.

No the fuck it does not. They are both stimulants, that’s effectively where the similarities end. A prescribed dose of adderal will not even come remotely close to the effects of recreational meth use.

20mg of Adderall and 20 mg worth of europaste will have similar effects.

There is a reason meth is far more popular for recreational use than adderal is. Its true that the effects of the drugs would be much more similar at equivalent doses, but I don’t think this is a useful comparison. You could make the same comparison between effectively any two stimulants. This does not mean they are all similar in any meaningful way. All it means is that they all provide mental stimulation, which is kind of the point. The only thing accomplished by making this comparison is furthering the stigma that people who are prescribed stimulants are actually just addicts.

While meth can provide an effect similar to a normal dose of adderal, no meth user actually takes that small of a dose. No one who casually reads that the effects are similar is going to understand that. They are going to assume adderal users are constantly high out of their minds on legal meth.

A high recreational dose would provide effects closer to a usual dose of meth. Not the same, but closer. The reason I dislike the comparison is because most people won’t understand that and will simply think adderal and meth are effectively the same as they are normally used.

Use of adderal as prescribed is not even remotely close to as dangerous as recreational meth use. I’m trying to prevent people from thinking that’s the case.

The similarities between the two drugs simply come from the fact they are both stimulants. The comparison can be made between any two stimulants. The reason adderal and meth are used is because of the stigma adderal has. The comparison perpetuates that stigma despite having very little actual relevance.

I didn’t interpret it as being exclusively about recreational use. Now that I’m re-reading it, I wouldn’t word my response the way I did.

I still think a response would be warranted to provide more clarification, but you are right to take issue with the way I did it. I used overly harsh wording because of my unwarranted emotional reaction to the claim. Because of that reaction, I also failed to account for the recreational use of adderal.

Having experience with both, it turns out you are correct but still an asshole. Meth is harder to dose correctly but it fixes the same problems with my brain that Adderall fixes.
