If someone has a problem with Windows and asks for advice, you must reply “I don’t have this problem because I use Linux” then wonder why everyone thinks you’re a cunt
The only thing holding me back from switching to Linux is gaming.
Nowadays you can run windows games with proton just as well if not better than on windows.
I’m thinking about tying Ubuntu.
Ubuntu is garbage and canonical are pure evil for everything they’ve done. Snaps? Garbage you need flatpaks/debs/app images.
Bro it’s easy just avoid any distro with systemd and gnome/goblin/plasma that’s why I use Trilby. It’s a molecular version of Susan.
I installed Linux mint for my Granma if she can use it anyone can. Though personally I use arch btw.
(I actually do use Linux, for anyone curious a bastardisation of Ubuntu + KDE wrangled to work on a MacBook that Apple are ditching support for… , btw)
I just installed KDE on my Ubuntu install. I wish I had explored KDE more before installing. I’m slowly wishing I had gone with Fedora’s KDE spin since so many pieces are moving so quickly right now for gaming and graphics in general. Ubuntu being feature cautious is a little annoying.
Well, luckly for me everyone knows I am cunt, so it doesnt matter what I post, so no different when I take the piss out of non Linux users.
It’s a bit like a reformed smoker I guess , having used Windows from 3.1 until 10 and now LDME for 12 months it’s tricky to not tell people to run away from the shit biscuit that is now Windows.
Lemmy fucking loves to just pull the handbrake and try to detail a conversation to align with their personal worldview/choices
Use the block button early and often if you value your sanity. Some people exist in the Fediverse solely to fuck up others’ day. Some entire instances almost seem dedicated to it even, or at least I can see no functional difference from where I stand. Reddit doesn’t have instances, so that part is new, but it’s not hard, it’s in your settings -> blocks -> scroll down to instance. Doing this can improve your experience here by like 99%. You’ll discover over time which ones you want to block.
I was going to say that although Reddit had a reasonably coherent hive mind, Lemmy is far more similar to eachother in our points of view.
But maybe that’s made more extreme because I’ve blocked so many voices that I don’t agree with, just because I’m not looking to spend my free time debating anymore.
I think Reddit is more exclusively USA-focused, with side-notes of UK and others, whereas Lemmy is more global. Therefore in Reddit that was more left-leaning than rightwardly so you mostly saw divisions between like young people vs. older ones - e.g. should a downvote be for something you don’t personally like or something that does not add to the conversation.
Like if someone submitted a guide for how to fix a toilet (to a let’s say home fixing sub) and it started to go viral then would you downvote it bc you don’t want to see that in your r/popular feed, or upvote or leave it alone bc it at least matches what it set out to be? Which really reflected the slide of the platform away from its roots as a forum board and into true “social media”, where interactions are monetized and hence the more the better, never mind that more downvotes leads to less people willing to submit actual content.
Although that’s over now, as the social media aspect won, so it’s all just that now, and therefore for most of us here, not worth visiting any longer. i.e. if I left the Fediverse, I still would not return there.
But here, I think it’s your block list, because I see a HUGE diversity of opinions. e.g. there are (a few) right-wing conservatives who actively support genocide so long as it is their own side doing it, and there are extremist left-wing tankies who also actively support genocide so long as it is their own side doing it, and too there are blue maga who soft-core support the doing of genocide so long as it is their side that needs to win, plus there are a few who even don’t support genocide, imagine that. :-P
I see a lot less of those extremes though after blocking hexbear.net, lemmygrad.ml, and finally I added Lemmy.ml. Also, while places such as conservative@lemm.ee exist and are active, they are tiny.
I’ve blocked more subs and people than what I have subscribed to. I don’t agree with the lemmy hive mind when it comes to politics so I had to block every person and sub that pushes a political agenda in order to enjoy the platform, it took a while and new subs and/or people show up now and then but now my feed is just the things I want to see.
Sadly that also ment blocking a lot of subs that would have been interesting had not 95% of the posts been actually pushing a political agenda instead of being either news or a discussion about something non political
I believe they’re called communities in the fediverse, not subs…
(Former long time Redditor)
I don’t mind explicitly political news, or even actual political communities, but nonetheless I feel you there bc when a community like memes explicitly asks to not include political matters, but then it gets inundated with political themed non-memes, it is highly annoying to see how little consent actually matters.
Whatever a community sets out to do, the rules should matter to people, but sadly there are a very large number of those for whom consent means nothing, apparently, only what they can get away with bullying a moderation team into accepting.
I kept switching instances - first as Kbin.social stopped working and then due to extreme slowness and connectivity issues at others - so I found it easier to block whole instances than individuals. That leaves me unable to communicate with some people on those instances who might be worthwhile, but that is a trade-off that I am willing to make since I found the interactions with people on those instances overwhelmingly negative, as in I would rather have left the Fediverse entirely than have to put up with that, though now that instance blocks exist I am glad to have that option instead:-).
This is not universal, I’ve blocked maybe seven people and two communities and I’m as good as ever, over a year into using Lemmy.
Blahaj.zone is already a pretty intensely curated experience as far as I recall
Great addition - I just wanted OP to be aware of what is possible, like if you continue to get notifications for multiple weeks after mistakenly making a comment on Chapotraphouse that didn’t bash Biden hard enough and then cease responding anymore yet continue to get those notifications daily… you don’t have to leave the entire Fediverse, it is possible to just separate yourself away from that source of (nonconsensual) noise.
But the further away you stay from politics communities(and news, and memes, and maybe other popular ones), the less controversial content you have to deal with. Many communities are outright tiny, and most (numerically anyway) I would wager are very non-toxic, and even friendly. But the bigger ones are worth a warning imho.
Don’t be a dick.
Glad I don’t have one.
You don’t have to have one to act like one.
Don’t worry, it’ll grow in eventually…
This.
…
That’s something you don’t do.
What three periods? I came from reddit so I just now put that before saying no sarcasm.
I believe they meant a comment solely containing the word
This.
As a response to a comment or post. The three dots (ellipsis) are just to separate.
And to add to the answer, the whole set of garbage regurgitated joke comments. I am glad to not see that here
If I ever see that shit come back I am fleeing to Nostr
This /s
Don’t forgot the proper use of “etc…”
I don’t understand it either, I think your post is fine.
It may be useful to know: I see that you received 4 other replies here, but I can’t load them. Afaik this is caused by instance blocks. Every instance has some other blocked, some less, some more, often with a reason. If you really want to read such comments you could try to look up your post on an other instance that does not block those, but you can also see (somewhere) the list of what instances have yours blocked, and you can have personal instance blocks too.
Mostly the reason for blocks is spam from that other instance, bad intentioned users possibly even ban evading when the instance does not have appropriate registration rules, and some instances have an agenda they want to shout loudly, which is often not at all friendly, and sometimes because of unwanted (porn), illegal (child porn), or relatively-dangerous-to-host (piracy) content.
The gist is that these instance blocks is often not arbitrary, but that ofc depends on your admins.
Since you haven’t gotten many real answers in either of your posts: be kind to your fellow humans and you’ll do well. If you’re a longer time redditor and/or mainly frequented smaller communities, you’ll do fine. If you’re newer to reddit and/or only hang out in the bigger communities maybe tone it down a touch? You can still shit post, just don’t do so from a troll’s perspective.
Like reddit, your experience can depend wildly on the community you’re engaging with.
Do keep in mind that the fediverse is tiny! Post and comment, just don’t lurk. That said, maybe try to not create two posts on basically the same topic. Also keep in mind that since this place isn’t that big, you will have people browsing all/new and all/hot that find your content and might react to it in a way that you wouldn’t expect from the people who frequent that community.
When a post/comment has something that you don’t understand, don’t reply “I don’t understand”. Instead, ask specific questions, or ask the user to rephrase what they said.
People here are quicker to catch up when others use “I don’t understand, I’m so confused…” for sealioning. That’s great, but it also means that people saying “I don’t understand” to genuinely ask for further info/explanations get a lot of stray bullets.
Other stuff. Not necessarily rules, but useful if you’re a newbie.
- People here throw a hissy fit against calling communities “subreddits” or “sublemmys”.
- I personally find useful to have different accounts on different instances to discuss political and non-political stuff.
- Don’t join the no poop challenge. Or join it and regret it later.
- When picking an instance to join, check its modlog. The thing that you care the most is 1) which rules they enforce, and 2) how transparently they do it.
If you post I’d personally be glad if you’d not spam your post to all remotely probable communities. It will end up like maybe 50 times in everyone’s “new” feed and some would consider this as post spamming.
Remember that the fediverse (lower case f, like “internet”) is about choice, and that choice is primarily about your admins. On Reddit, if you didn’t like a subreddit, you could go to another subreddit or start your own subreddit, so you had some choice of moderators. But you were locked to the Reddit admins.
On the fediverse, you should vote with that choice, in the same way you vote with your wallet or vote in actual political elections in real life.
So don’t just go to the largest and most active instance “just because”. Consider your options, find an instance that fits your interests or your location and which has admins that seem reasonable to you, with rules that seem reasonable to you. Remember that different instances are different websites altogether - what goes on one instance might be heinous on another.
That’s kind of an unwritten rule - every instance is different and has their own rules, written or unwritten. Be mindful of that when choosing your own instance and when visiting other instances.
Each instance has its own vibe and you can generally get a feel for what a user will be like based on their home instance
.world is mostly reddit refugees who, like you, are still learning the ropes. .ml is mostly unpleasant people that happen to hold left-wing beliefs. feddit.de is germans. Etc.
I find lemmygrad and hexbear to have unpleasant people. .ml is moderated by the lemmy developers who are unpleasant people with left wing beliefs 🤣
Hexbear and lemmy.ml are mostly just tankies. .ml has local censoring so some words will be censored some of ur comments and their comments wont show up due to selective modlog federation.
.world ur home server is too large i would recommend u move to another instance at some point in the future. They have also defederated a lot pf instances including the piracy instance so a more lenient instance might be better suited if u value free speach.
Other than that be generally respectfull and engage in good faith and its pretty much thw same as Reddit. Ohh also try to avoid mentioning reddit outside of the reddit communitys we dont need to keep talking about our abusing ex.
What’s a tankie?
Thanks.
An asshole
Left wing beliefs expected but actually optional.
Currently on .world wasn’t aware piracy instance was defederated, any instances you would recommend as an alternative?
Im not sure if it still is they where flip flopping on it but .world has defederated a lot of instances (it does cut out a lot of the spam and toxicity). But if your like to be in charge of blocking instances communities urself then other instances might be best.
Im on lemm.ee for various reasons mainly the relaxed stance on defederation the admin seems very level headed and has extrordinarilly good uptime and servuce quality.
This post outlines a lot of said policy. https://lemm.ee/post/35472386
Dont take my word for anything tho do ur own research and think for yourself.
Thanks for the information, I’ll check it out.
Beware the echo chambers.
echooooo echooo echoo
There’s a setting in your profile to auto-hide posts that you’ve voted on. Not a rule but I would recommend enabling this so you can see more posts throughout the day.
That is cool did not know that thanks for sharing…no sarcasm.
However, the lemmyverse is still rather small. I find it’s better to not hide posts so you can return later. It can take a day or three to get some comments, so its nice to see the traction some posts gain.
Happy to help :)
Up vote almost everything. Unless you hate it, or are completely indifferent to it, up vote it.
I swear this place runs on burning Star Trek memes. If the feed ever dies just chuck a couple in and that should restart the engine.
Eventually, everything reverts back to Beans.
